Adding memory

I just added some memory to XP. I am trying to upgrade it
from 128 to 256. It won't recognize in either banks.
After I installed it the motherboard it beeped 5 times
and wouldn't load XP.

What now?

What now?

Sounds like your motherboard is not compatible with the new RAM that
you purchased.

What is the make and model of your motherboard/computer? Go to
www.crucial.com and use their RAM selector to identify the proper type
of RAM for you specific system.

If you cannot get any results following the good advice from Jim, take the
original module out and go with that in your hand to a PC / memory shop.

They will be able to match the performance with another module in stock [by
reading the chip type / code of the individual chips on the module.

The beeping definitely confirms that the mobo doesn't like the memory you
bough so don't try using it any more, it may get damaged.

It is absolutely essential that any new RAM module(s) be fully
compatible with both the motherboard and/or any other RAM module(s)
already in the system. Additionally, there are sometimes jumper
switches on older motherboards that need to be reset for new RAM
configurations. Consult your motherboard's manual or the
manufacturer's web site for specific instructions and compatibility
requirements.

If you cannot lay your hands upon the computer's manual and the
manufacturer doesn't provide a support web site, you can use these
utilities to help determine the correct type of RAM needed:
