Adding memory causes system to hang

I have a T1140 emachine with a LM810E motherboard. The OS is XP Home ED. with
Service Pack 2. When I add memory it causes the system to hang. According
to MS Online Analysis "These types of errors indicate the operating system
has determined that the graphics driver was taking too long for an operation
to complete and that the driver appears to have stopped responding. To the
operating system, it appears as though the graphics driver may be stuck in an
infinite loop. This sort of error only occurs in Microsoft Windows XP." I
have downloaded the final graphics driver for my chipset and I still have the
same problem. Tech support at emachines has basically just shrugged their
shoulders. My thought is that there may be some sort of "fix" for the OS
that would tell it that everything is ok, I just have a slow machine. I
appreciate any help.

I don't think so. I have tried a dozen or so different brands recommended by
the manufacturer and got the same results every time.

"A dozen different brands" is not the way to buy memory. Only one kind of memory works in your computer - the one that's exactly compatible. Finding it is easy: Just go to the web sites of the major RAM manufacturers - www.crucial.com is an excellent choice - and find the exact RAM for your make and model of computer.

DL,

Thanks for your reply.

I have tried single, double and mixed new and old memory to no avail.

The soution is as follows:

The problem is, when I add memory it triggers the system to hang - the
screen freezes - usually a few minutes after Windows has loaded and the
desktop is displayed.

According to Intel, the maker of the graphics controller, "These types of
errors indicate that the operating system has determined that the graphics
driver was taking too long for an operation to complete and that the driver
appears to have stopped responding. To the operating system, it appears as
though the graphics driver may be stuck in an infinite loop. This sort of
error only occurs in Microsoft Windows XP."

Intel's solution was to download the latest driver. It didn't help.

Emachines techs, after making me stand on my head add cluck like a chickhen,
said everything should work and implied the problem was user error. Their
final solution was to re-install everything using the restore CD and see if
that worked. It didn't.

I have talked to in-store techs, Microsoft techs, techs at various memory
manufacturers, techs who are just wandering the street - I may have talked to
every tech in the world. None came up with a solution. One said it was the
power supply another said it was the hard drive. One tech suggested that I
may have installed the memory backwards. I didn't realize that was possible.
I would like to see it.

I had been thinking of installing a video card when I got a post from Badger
suggesting the same thing.

1. I disabled the onboard graphics controller.

2. Installed the video card.

3. Installed the new memory.

Success! Everything worked.

Now my only problem is finding all the screws that go to my computer so I
can put it back together.

Thanks again.

Steve

Then although you have 'tried different manu' have you e.g. used the crucial
/ corsair configerator for guaranteed to run on your sys memory?
At least then you will get support from the mem.manu with a refund if nec.
I have had good supprt from both mem.manu.
