Adding Icons to Desktop

I have a habit of adding shortcuts to the desktop for web sites I
regularly visit.

In XP these shortcuts on the desktop would somehow get the business
logo added to the shortcut without any action on my part. These made
them easy to see.

With Vista this never happens on some, like Best Buy for instance.

Anybody know how to get the icon on the desktop shortcut.

Thanks

They are called favicons. You can usually download them separately at the
location http://domainname.com/favicon.ico. IE6 and earlier used to have
very dodgy support for them, but since Firefox and IE7, they have become
nearly universal.

I used to use FavOrg, for years, with 2000 and XP and IE6, as they used to
disappear very easily. FavOrg made them persistent. I have never tried it
with IE7, but it may work for what you want to do. Just make sure that your
Desktop icons are included in the Favourites that it is working on. (It's
been so long since I used it that I cannot remember if you can make it work
on anything outside the default Favourites folder.

If FavOrg cannot be used on the Desktop icons, you could always do what it
does yourself, by saving the favicon from the site at
http://sitename.com/favicon.ico in a folder (hide it somewhere), and then
going to your desktop Shortcut's Properties and change the icon to the saved
one.

Didn't it work then, or did you give up on it?

Sorry to leave you hanging. The sites you suggested didn't work but
knowing what they were called I did a search and found a site that had
the Best Buy logo in with a png extension. Also found instructions on
how to get the png to work but haven't had a chance to work on it.

Hi Swalker,

This will show you how to have a interent shortcut and keep the favicon
for it and not get the default IE7 e icon instead.

Those links (apart from the FavOrg one) were just examples. You replace the
domainname bit to the domain that you want the favicon for. So the BestBuy
favicon is here:

http://www.bestbuy.com/favicon.ico

If FavOrg does not work and do it all automatically for you, just right
click that favicon and save it to a folder somewhere. Save all the favicons
you want there. Then associate those favicons to your desktop shortcuts.

hello swalker
try right clicking on empty desktop space/view/clck classic

Have you tried going to the website, right clicking on the webpage and
selecting "create shortcut"? Is this what you mean?
