Adding Fields to A linked table

I am new to all this so i'm hoping there is an easy answer to this!

I have been asked to add a field to a database i didn't write and i cannot
track down the person who wrote it.

The table i am trying to add a field to is linked and everytime i go into
design view i get a message telling me that some properties cannot be changed
- do i want to open anyway. - i click yes and it opens up design view.

I add the field i want - a Yes/No Field and click save but get message
telling me that access cannot save the changes. If anyone has any ideas but
needs more info please reply and i will be happy to give more info.

What's it linked to? Another database? An Excel Spreadsheet?

This sounds like you are dealing with a front-end/back-end scenario. You
won't be able to perform structural changes to linked tables. You will need
to go to the db holding the tables.

If you don't know where that db is, with Access2003 (not sure of older
versions) simply floating the cursor over the table will give you the
location of the linked db. You could also looked in Linked Table Manager, to
see.

Then just go to the linked db, make your changes, and close it back up. On
the newer versions of Access, the new field will automatically show up on the
front-end dbs. Older ones you may need to relink the table.
