Adding A Second (Maxtor) ard Drive?

Hi all,

I have kind of a basic question, but in a near future attempt to add a new
hard drive to my system I believe I may have a problem. I have a Maxtor 30G
Hard drive in my computer. My computer is self-built with an Abit
KT7A-133mhz motherboard, 1.2 Athlon Chip, 512k memory. I have a DVD drive
and CDR-W drive also installed (IDE). My Hard drive is master and my CDR is
slave. In the second of 2 "output slots" on the motherboard is my DVD. All
is well. In a preliminary test I unplugged the CDR drive from the hard
drive ribbon cable and let it stay empty. I then used the cable to my DVD
drive and used the "middle" ( which was empty) plug to connect to my CDR,
figuring the 2 disk drives would run together on one cable and the new (
Maxtor 80G--on it's way) would run off the cable from the my original hard
drive. After doing so, I have lost both disk drives ( not being detected by
Windows XP ). No error message, just no detection. After a couple of boots
I decided that's not going to work and now am not sure what I might have
done wrong ( or not done right) in what I thought should've worked. There
is another bay for a 3 1/4 HD, but maybe I have to simply replace and copy
my existing HD to the new one and use one hard drive in my system, which is
OK. If I haven't totally confused anyone, is there something I neglected in
my first test configuration? There are no more slots for 3rd cable to run
to the new HD. If I use just the one ( new) HD can I temporarily use a
cable from one of the disk cables to copy my current operating system and
contents directly to the new drive, then remove the old and work off the new
one? Any ideas, suggestions, or advice would certainly be of value to me,
'cause it appears I don't know what my next step will be when the new drive
arrives. Thanks,

Al (e-mail address removed)
