Adding a 'photo gallery'?

T

Terry Pinnell

Up until now in FP 2000 I've added photos by what I suppose is a
fairly pedestrian method. I just make tables and drag smallish images
or thumbnails across to the cells. I link the thumbnails to larger
versions of the images, and rely on users clicking a thumbnail and
then returning by using the back button. Here's an example from my
home site:
http://dspace.dial.pipex.com/terrypin/Walks/TP04/walkphotos04.htm

But what more effective ways are there to manage pictures please? I'm
thinking of something like the 'gallery' arrangement at this page
http://www.thamespathproject.co.uk/cgi-bin/disp_event_details.asp?Stage=1&page=0

where the first thumbnail links to this photo
http://www.thamespathproject.co.uk/cgi-bin/disp_photo_large.asp?pic=14

but then you can browse through the rest. And there's a caption too,
which my method doesn't have.

Any suggestions would be appreciated please. What methods do other
more experienced FP users adopt?

I would second the recommendation of J-Album although I don't
know how this is going to work out with FP as it uses FTP to upload
images. I used it when I was still using Dreamweaver. Currently I'm
setting up Coppermine on a different domain and linking it into my
site. Coppermine uses a graphical library on the server called GD to
resize images on the fly. All images are store in a MySQL database. Of
course one should note that this is a UNIX program and I believe is
not available on Windows servers.

I could be wrong but I think you can just 'publish' the folder of JAlbum
stuff as you would with other FP items. I don't think you need to ftp per
se. Please let me know if I'm wrong!!

So you would publish the JAlbum to a local directory and then
use FP to publish to the web ? I think that might work but there may
also be certain difficulties as evidenced in the Jalbum forum.

Publish to a folder on your HD, then import that folder into your current open FP web / site, then
it will published with the rest of your content, or convert the folder to subweb / site and publish
independent of the root web.

Before spending much time with the other photo programs, I recommend
you at least try the FrontPage Photo Gallery. It is so easy and super
fast, and it works. I've used it for years and the only modification
is adding these words to the page with the photo gallery: "Click on an
image to enlarge".

Just remember to mark all your photos at once and create your gallery
and then click on the publish button and you are done.

Thanks Thomas. Reminds me that I often overlook the simple
solutions.

You import the entire folder that you generated the JAlbum into, into FP. Then Publish.

Just did another one with the XP skin...had a lot of pix in it...11 meg...no problemos.

What does "mark all your photos at once" mean?

The most important reason for using another program is that the FP photo
galleries are only able to show the larger version as a jpg in the top left
corner of what isn't even a page. That's boring considering that there are
so many more attractive ways to do it. Please read my article and look at
the examples.

I believe he means select all of the files you want in the gallery using Control+Click and then
create the gallery.
Works for me.

Thanks for all those helpful replies.

I've installed JAlbum and have just started experimenting with it.

I'll have a crack with FP's in-built facilities too, if only to make a
comparison.

And I think I might sweat tediously through a 'semi manual' approach,
adding each large image to its own page (in FP). That way I will see
what's going on more easily. If I can use my external keystroke macro
program (Stiletto, now obsolete), I may be able to minimise the tedium
of repetition.

My first target will be my home pages, at Dial Pipex, using my free
web space. That does not have FP Server Extensions. So presumably I
*must* use my FTP program (CuteFTP in my case)?

It works fine...I just did a huge one - with several subfolders.

Don't let JAlbum generate the album into FP though!

You wanna set up a folder on your HD to generate the JAlbum into (outside of FP)...you'll use this to experiment until you get the album the way you want (JAlbum will let you preview it in your browser when the album is finished being created)

Then...when your happy, rename that folder (the one outside of FP) to the name you want it to be inside your web.

Then...with your web/side open in FP (local): File | Import Folder

Then...you can use FP to tweek the pages if you want...like to add a link back to your Home page or whatever. For heavy-duty changes you'll want to tweek the JAlbum style sheets before you generate the album...but I don't recommend doing this until you're familiar with JAlbum.

I've never had a problem with FP messin' JAlbum up or vice-versa.

If you want I'll post a link to the ones Ive done.

You can use FP's FTP publish mode - works for me on the rare occasions I use
it for publishing to Pipex.
use ftp://dslftp.dsl.pipex.com as the publish address. (change the dsl
references to suit dial space.)

Thanks, I'll give that a try.

BTW, the observant will have noticed that when I said "I'll have a
crack with FP's in-built facilities too..." I was being a tad
ambitious, as FP 2000 doesn't have Photo Gallery!

Evidently JAlbum will NOT work unless you have java installed.

"JAlbum needs at least v1.3 of Suns Java runtime (or equivalent) to
run. Microsofts Java is unfortunately too old. If you haven't
previously installed a Java runtime (or don't know), either select the
option that includes one (Windows users) or download "Java for the
desktop" first. Macintosh users already have a Java runtime installed
and can download and run JAlbum right away. "

That rules it out for me.
