Hi everyone,
I've been perusing the ng and it's been invaluable. We have
four machines currently connected to Microsoft 801G wireless router.
The main one is XP, then there's an ME and a venerable Thinkpad 560,
all hooked by wire. So far they network fine, the ME can print through
the XP (the only reason the Thinkpad can't is because the print
drivers are on CD and it doesn't have a drive).
The only small, remaining problem lies with the fourth, a Dell
Latitude running SE and hooked up via wireless. The Dell can both
access documents on the other three and print through the XP. I can
ping the Dell by name and by IP. When I run the MS broandband utility
on the XP it shows the Dell by name, no problem. But it doesn't appear
in the network neighborhood, and I can't access *its* files from the
other machines.
I thought the problem was not having run the XP network setup
on the Dell, even though I did install the MS broadband software. The
Dell doesn't have a floppy drive, so I set the one on the XP to share,
transferred the file (the whole thing, not just a shortcut) and ran
it. It seemed to go okay, but then on reboot, insisted that my
networking hardware wasn't installed, and I'd have to do that first. I
did try turning off the pcmcia card, taking it out and putting it back
in, then rebooting. Same effect.
After reading through previous comments, I should point out
that the Dell also has a different log in. Different user name (my
wife
, but the same password. I wondered whether I ought to change
the log in to the same I use on the other three, but the networking
hardware message caught me up short.
Any ideas?
