Adding 2003 DC to 2000 Native AD Domain

Mike Towan

I am going to be adding a new 2003 DC to a current Windows 2K AD Domain in
native mode. Anything I need to be concerned about aside from the forest
prep??? Should I transfer FSMO roles over to the 2003 DC ? Is that something
that gets done automatically?

Any caveats on impacts on the current 2000 DC's?

Any and all input would be appreciated.

Hello Mike,

Thank you for choosing Microsoft and for using our Newsgroups. I have
reviewed the information you have provided this far. My understanding of
the issue is the following:

You have concerns with adding a Windows 2003 DC to a preexisting Windows
2000 forest,
And you would like to know if the FSMO roles will transfer automatically to
the new Windows 2003 DC.

First of all I high recommend that you read kb325379 (link to article is
below) which describes how to add new Windows Server 2003 domain
controllers to Windows 2000 domains. This article is very good, as it has
the steps to take incase you have Microsoft Exchange Server 2000 or 2003
already in the environment, as well as the steps you need to take to add
the new Windows 2003 DC. As for the affect of the existing DCs in your
environment, all DC will be affected as the Active Directory will be update
via the forestprep and domainprep switches. The FSMO will not transfer to
the new Windows 2003 Server by default.

More information on this may be found in our public knowledgebase article:
