Added 2nd HD, lost 1st

My emachine XP wouldn't come up completely. Kept rebooting, even in Safe
Mode. My bright idea: Get a new HD. Put XP on that. Make it the Master
and make the old HD the slave. Save the data and figure uout the boot
problem later. The new HD works fine. XP can't see the old drive. Diskpart
shows the old drive as Disk 0, Partition 1, No Volume and Hidden. How can I
correct this without losing my data on the old drive?

Try typing diskmgmt.msc In run,in msc,L.click the old hd,go to actions,all,
select "Make active",close out msc. Also, chk the jumper pins on the hds & set
all connected to the IDE cable correctly..

That was in START>RUN> Right? Cool, that brings up Disk Management.
In run,in msc,
Ok, that part confused me. I'm not sure what you mean by that. The views
available in Disk Management are: Disk List, Volume List or Graphical View.
In Disk List, Disk 0 (should be the old guy), the Action Pull-down Menu
shows Refresh, Rescan Disks, All Tasks and Help.
L.click the old hd,go to actions, all, select "Make active",close out msc.
All Tasks shows two options: Convert to Dynamic Disk and then Properties.
I don't have a Make Active option.

That was my first thought. I've done that more times than I can count.
I've reread the SeaGate documentation. I've tried it with Master/Slave -
Cable Select... Nothing works. I have to boot - hit F10 and tell it to read
from the new drive. If I let it default to the old drive I get the same old
unsatisfactory boot that won't come up. That proves the BIOS can still read
the old HD. Windows just won't recognize it anymore.

Many, many moons ago, I could swap out HDs with no problem. Now it's a
serious chore. Have things changed that much or have I forgotten somethng?

Sounds like your older hard drive needs a jumper reconfiguration when adding
the new hard drive as slave.
