Add/Removed page problem

D

Dick

This is my second try for assistance as the first didn't work. On my new
Toshiba laptop XP SP2 the add/remove listed programs use the top 10% and
the bottom 10% of the entire page. The remaining 80% in the center of the
page is blank or has wide black vertical stripes. Lots of scrolling between
the two portions. The first suggestion was a defect in the
Hkey_Local_Machine\software\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion \Uninstall,
which is the only place I can find mention of Add/Remove. It suggested that
a ",-1" at the end of the line was causing the problem. The only line that
I have is "C:\windows\system32\addremove.ico", and nothing more.
Suggestions please. TIA, Dick

That fix applies if you have AutoCad installed. If you don't have AutoCad
installed, then download my script below and run it. Post the results here.
This script lists all the negative icon references present in the registry,
and creates a log file for troubleshooting.

Download http://windowsxp.mvps.org/utils/ARPNegCheck.vbs

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately there are no negative references.
The log shows:
Add/Remove Programs entries with negative icon references

<-----Begin----->

None found....
* Where HKLM refers to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

Now what might I do? TIA Dick

Check here (manually) also.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Installer\Products]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Installer\Products]

Check for the negative icon references in the "ProductIcon" value under each
sub-key

Apart from that, I don't have any idea why this occurs. Perhaps you could
use the following application to remove one entry at a time from Add/Remove
Programs to isolate the problem.

"Remove" - software uninstaller - Review
http://www.snapfiles.com/screenshots/remove.htm

Note that this standalone program creates a backup when you delete an entry
from the listing. You can undo the changes once you find the offending entry
in Add/Remove.

All the best to you. FYI, I an simulate the problem by setting a negative
icon for the "ProductIcon" value for one of the Windows Installer products.
Let me know how it goes. I'll then rewrite my script to do a comprehensive
search for the offending registry values, or perhaps compile a specialized
program soon.

I found a number of "ProductIcon" under Root, one under Current User, one
under Users, a number of them under Local Machine, and checked them all and
found no negative numbers. I'll keep digging. Thanks, Dick

The entry that's shown after the "blank" space is causing the problem. It
has a negative or incorrect icon (or no DisplayIcon) set. Also have you
tried the following software (included in my earlier post)

If that does not help, I'll try to repro the situation if you send me the
registry exports of the three registry keys:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Installer\Products]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Installer\Products]

The "Uninstall" branch
and
the screenshot of Add/Rmove Programs (want to know what's shown next to the
blank space)

Hi Ramesh, I tried posting all of the captures, etc. to the group and it
failed after 5 minutes or so. Should I send them direct to you, and if so
to where? You can reply to me direct to (e-mail address removed) if that will
help. Dick

You may send it to me via email. BTW, remove the string "XOX." from my email
id.

BTW, I've rewritten the Arpnegcheck.vbs script to check additional two
registry locations. You may try running that as well.
