I am running XP Pro SP2 and the add remove programs window loads but just
displays 'Please wait while the list is being populated...' & nothing more
happens. The 3 other buttons on the left side of the screen work fine.

Please ignore Andrew E. He's a troll who gives bad advice.

The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time
things worked and the time they didn't?

The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the
malware/virus status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what
programs (and versions) did you use to determine this?

Be sure the computer is clean:

After you've done the above troubleshooting, if the computer is clean
and you still can't use Add/Remove Programs, post back. Refer to this
link to see what details you need to include in your next post:

While this won't solve the problem you're having , here is a freeware
program I've been using for a couple of weeks with great success.

It doesn't give quite as much info as the windows program but is much
faster. It will at least let you remove those programs until you can figure
out your problem. Read the info on their page...it's quite complete. Good
luck.
