Add/Remove Programs Info - utility?

I have finally figured out that information about programs listed in the
Add/Remove Programs applet is stored in the registry at:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

Is there a utility that displays this info in a complete but more accessible
manner than the registry?

The Add/Remove Programs applet doesn't tell you much about the programs.

Thank you for that tidbit. I never thought to look in the registry
for that info.

I can't help in your request, but you can make a "favorite" of the
location of it, but you still have to run Regedit first and then from
the menu bar choose "Favorites."

What is it you want to know?

Well, specifically, I have a version of ATI Multimedia Center (bundled with
my All-in-Wonder). I am trying to upgrade to a newer version, but the
upgrade always aborts because it's looking for something from the previous
installation. When I try to follow directions and uninstall the old
version, the uninstaller starts up and then aborts. I'm trying to figure
out why that happens. The information in the Uninstall registry key is
interesting. Anything you can see in the Add/Remove applet, is in the
registry key, plus much more. Of particular interest are the
UninstallString, LogFile, InstallSource, etc. The Logfile value points to a
hidden folder called:

C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation
Information\{3CBA0E30-6F54-47EF-910E-1D4D450AFE45}\Setup.ilg

What I am looking for is a utility that displays this information in a more
accessible manner than the Registry keys.

Steve;

Interesting proggy. Your sys requirements say "min win95, recommended
win98." What about NT-based winos'?

Thats just the recommended minimum ;o) ..... it will work on all versions of
Windows upto and including Server 2003.

As a long time user of ATI AIW cards (sometimes known as serial-madness)
this is a well documented problem. Do a google search for "ati mmc
uninstaller" and you will find dozens of references.

All ATI drivers have to be removed before upgrading and ATI provide a
uninstall utility for this purpose. It should already be on your computer
and is called aticimun.exe
It should be in ...\program files\catalyst or ...\program files\ATI
Technologies\Uninstaller.

You do not say what ATI AIW card you are using but ATI puts a ceiling on the
MMC version which can be used for any particular card. Make sure you have
the correct version.

Hi Rich,

I don't want to stray from the subject of "freeware" but I can pass on a
little lesson that will be useful to any one interested in uninstall
utilities.

I ran that ATI uninstall utility - over and over! But still it never got
rid of all the traces of Multimedia Center 8.5, and I was still unable to
install version 9.13. I did all the "manual" uninstall recommendations too,
no luck.

Finally, I hit upon a solution that work. I ran the original MMC 8.5
installation utility! It had three options - Modify (didn't work), Repair
(didn't work), and REMOVE. The Remove option did the trick. Then, and only
then, was I able to install MMC 9.13.

This made sense - the MMC 8.5 installation program knew where all the traces
of the program were put, because it put them there in the first place.

So, that's the moral of the story for ACF users - when trying to uninstall a
program, you just might check out whether the original installation file
came with a Remove option.
