Add/Remove Programs Freezes

Hello. My problem is that when I click on the add/remove
programs button the function freezes after showing a msg
that is something like: "please wait while populating
list of programs." It doesn't list any programs and fails
to respond thereafter. This locks up the computer. I
can't turn on task manager or get into the start menu and
have to push the off button.

Any clues as to what could be wrong and how to fix?
Recently did a clean install and problem is subsequent to
install.

Thanks for your attention.

.
First scan for any viruses, then run the system file
checker tool, click start, run, type in; "sfc /scannow"
(with that space after the sfc), and have your XP CD ready
if it ask for it, or borrow a CD.

Solved my problem, posting it here in case it helps anyone
else. It was as simple as booting up in safe mode and
checking to see if add/remove programs worked there. It
did. And it works now after booting normally.
