Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs:
Microsoft Internet Explorer - Add/Remove gives three options:
Add a component
Repair
Restore the previous Windows configuration.

The Repair option is obvious.
However what does third one (Restore...) mean and what does it do?
Also what components can be added to IE?

Mike,
1. Add a component to IE:
There are several language support and other programs plug-ins that are available during installation of IE, that are not installed automatically when you install IE6, that can me added manually through this method or on the MS Update site.

If you ever need to repair OE6, you will need to uninstall that program only in most cases, not haveing the need to replace the entire IE package. So that after uninstalling OE, you will need to go here to just add OE. Some people inititally don't use OE for their mail client, so they do not install it at the of upgrade, but later want to install it.

2. Return to previous configuration:
If you upgraded from an earlier version of IE, say IE5.5 to OE6.0, and had isssues with it, that you prefered to go back. Selecting this, would take your PC back, to use IE5.5. I have a PBell Pentium w/333Mhz CPU. It seemed to cause problems when I upgraded to IE/OE6.0 from IE/OE5.5 . So this method help me return IE/OE back to the earlier version.

Thank you very much for clear and elaborate explanation.

PS It would have been easier for the less initiated if it read "restore
previous IE version" rather than " Windows configuration"

Mike,
Yes it seems that whoever writes the pop windows for MS software, really needs to make themselves clearer. For example, the error message in OE, when you cannot get mail because of username & password issues, and that you/your ISP have made no changes on their or your end. And it work before. It is written like there is a problem with the settings in your OE setup. But it can be really mean that your Mail server is down, and OE could not verify username and password information on the mail server. All you need is to wait, and try later to access your mail.

I think with every version of Windows came a significant upgrade of IE/OE. And the upgrades that were available from MS update sites, in my opinion were actually just Service Packs (SP's) to those versions.

Say you had Win98 First ed, that came with IE/OE4. And you never upgraded through the different versions of IE/OE5, and jump straight to IE/OE6. Did not like it, went back to IE4/OE4, so technically you are back to the original configuration of Win98 FE, with some upgrades to the original IE/OE4 programs.
