Add/Remove Doesn't actually remove!

I'm having a wierd problem with Add/Remove programs. Programs that were
previously deleted still have entries in the Add/Remove program screen.
However, if I try to uninstall again, they still aren't deleted, and if I try
to reinstall the programs (some of which I want back) they won't install
because the old entries won't go away! Does anybody know of a fix for this?
It's annoying to not be able to use software I paid for. :)
Thanks!

.
Run some maintenance like the disk cleanup and defrag
tools. Try the system file checker tool too by typing
this in the run box; sfc /scannow with that space, and it
may ask for your XP CD. I would use a good registry
cleaner utility program such as those found here;
http://www.rosecitysoftware.com/reg1aid/register.html and
here; http://www.zoneutils.com/regheal/index.htm or this
one; http://www.v-com.com/product/Fix-
It_Utilities_Home.html

Thanks Jim, you're my hero. You have no idea how long I've been trying to
remedy this problem. Take it easy. :)

This is a very common problem and is usually corrected by editing the
registry.
Click start--run--type in regedit--click ok.
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE_Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current
version\uninstall
highlite and delete.
