Add Notepad file association to Folder Options

Hello,

Can someone please help me? I have a question but first
let me tell you what I did so you can follow. Okay, here
goes:

Okay, I go to Start Menu, Control Panel, Folder Options,
then click on "File Types" tab, then click "New" to
create a New Extension, then type CFG and click OK.

Then I select the CFG Extension I just created
under "Registered File Types" in Folder Options. Then
under "Details for CFG Extension" I click "Change".

And then it says "Windows cannot open the file" and asks
me if I want to
a)"Use the Web Service to find the appropriate
program" OR
b)"Select the program from a list"

So I select "b" and then it says to "Choose the program
you want to use to open this file". The problem is that
the program that I want to use is Notepad but I cannot
find it in that list anymore. I remember it used to be
there but something happened to my computer and now it
has disappeared.

My Questions is:

How can I put the Notepad program back in that list so I
can associate the CFG extension to it so I can open any
CFG files in Notepad?

Thank you. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Charles

P.S. The CFG file extension used to be associated with
the Microsoft Outlook program so I deleted it and created
another one.

Charles,

Am really not sure you can do what you are trying, but good luck!)

Answer in part:

Open With Notepad for Files With No Extension (Line 25)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Troubleshooting Open With in XP
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_o.htm#openwith

Check your settings here:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications
Select the associated sub-key, if 'NoOpenWith' is listed, delete it.

Also here:

This setting allows you to control whether the checkbox to save the "Open
With" program is available when an unknown file type is opened.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Unknown\shell\openas\command

and

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\openas\command

Charles,

If you want .CFG files to be opened with Notepad, you may use this REG file:
-----------------------------------------------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.cfg\shell\open\command]
@="notepad %1"

-----------------------------------------------------------
NOTE: *The existing CFG association may get overwritten*

This is one of the methods.
