Add IE shortcut to Desktop

T

Tom Ziegmann

Here is a quick registry fix to add the IE shortcut to the desktop. Copy the
below registry entry into a notepad document and save as "addie.reg" (must
use quotes) and then merge it into the registry and then click on the
desktop and then press F5 and voila you will have the shortcut.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\NewStartPanel]
"{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}"=dword:00000000

What does this fix fix?

I can drag IE shortcuts from the address bar to the desktop already, so I am
unsure what this is supposed to fix.

Too, if you want the "non-shortcut" IE icon with the special context menu,
you can right-click on an empty area of the desktop, and choose Personalize.
When the Control Panel\Personalization window comes up, in the left pane,
choose "Change desktop icons".

It creates a permanent shortcut.

OK, now I understand what shortcut is being referred to know. But the IE
icon is no longer listed like it was in XP (in Build 5840 at least).

It is gone in the RTM build. I'm currently using RTM and it no longer
exists, unfortunately.

That is why I posted the registry entry. To help those of us without that
checkbox.

Wow, I didn't know that. I'm running Build 5744, and IE is a choice among
the special icons listed. The registry in this build already has the values
and keys posted by Tom. I wonder why it was removed? Too, it used to be a
choice in Internet Options>Advanced, in earlier versions of IE, but I don't
see it there anymore.

I don't understand why they removed it in RTM. Granted its just a cosmetic
thing, but I like having the desktop shortcut.

The decision to remove it might have something to do with MS not wanting to
look like they are trying to monopolizing the browser market, to avoid court
cases.

I'm wondering if it's another hair-brained security measure to keep the kids
from Internet Options (Properties), which is a context menu item I find
convenient. On the other hand, security-wise, it offers Start Without
Add-ons.... Who knows.

The WM spellcheck made a nice job of messing up that post. OE didn't do
that. How do I turn on the proper UK dictionary?

I don't think there is one right now, as the MUI and language packs have
been finalized.

You can have it as standard if you select it in desktop icons.
