Add icons to Taskbar?

Is the Taskbar the section next to Start -- or is that Quick Launch?
Whatever the section next to Start is called, I've tried dragging program
icons there but they don't "drop". How can I customize this section?

Check to make sure the taskbar isn't locked. Right-click on an empty
area of the taskbar and uncheck "Lock Taskbar". Then you'll be able to
right-click/drag-move[or copy] to the Quick Launch bar.

When I right-clicked the Taskbar, there was no checkmark next to "Lock
taskbar," but this time when I tried dragging an icon there it did work. (?)
So thanks, I think.

However, I'm still unclear what's the Taskbar and what's the Quick Launch
bar. Are these the same?

No. The Taskbar is the main toolbar at the bottom of your screen. It can
have various toolbars added to it such as the Quick Launch toolbar. The
QL toolbar is handy because shortcuts there will launch a program with
only one click as opposed to the standard two-click action on the
Desktop.

Consider buying a basic "Windows XP for Dummies" book. I mean no
disrespect by saying this (the "For Dummies" title is an unfortunate
choice but the series is generally useful); you will find yourself
happier and more productive on your computer if you know a bit more
about using it.

Thanks for clearing up the confusion. I think I'll skip the Dummies book,
though -- I'm not yet up to that level.

You've had your "how to" question answered by Malke, but let me add a few
comments about all this "bar" stuff.

The Task Bar is the the bar that by default runs along the bottom edge of
your screen (although it can be dragged elsewhere). By default, it's
arranged in four parts like this, from left to right:

the Start button
the Quick Launch Bar
the area that contains little bars with an icon and the name of each running
program
The System Notification Area (aka the System Tray), which contains
the clock and icons for programs running in th ebackground.

The Quick Launch Bar contains shortcut icons used to start programs. Those
icons are really no different from shortcut icons on the desktop, but it's
convenient to have some of them in the Quick Launch Bar because they don't
get covered up by running programs. You can drag icons on and off the Quick
Launch Bar as you desire.

Although many people think the Quick Launch Bar is part of the Task Bar,
actually it's not. It's a separate tool bar, and like other tool bars, can
be shown or eliminated. Like other tool bars, it can appear *on* the Task
Bar (and does appear there by default) or it can be dragged off the Task Bar
entirely and docked on another side of the screen. A problem with keeping it
on the Task Bar is that it can't hold very many icons without taking up a
lot of the Task Bar, so one of the choices I often recommend is dragging it
off the Task Bar and docking it on the left (or right) side of the screen

The Task Bar is also resizable, like a window. By default, it's one line
high, but you can click its border and drag it upward to make it bigger.

To make changes to any of this, make sure the Task Bar is unlocked first.
