Task bar icons not appearing

I am using Windows XP. Suddenly taskbar icons are not appearing in the
taskbar even though I have the boxes checked in the Control Panel for the
various icons to appear. Is there a fix for this?

Additionally, some icons appear one day and are not there the next.

You wrote "suddenly", so this seems perhaps unlikely, but
have you checked to see whether the icons are there but
invisible? Do you have a little circle with a "<" in it just to
the left of the icons you _do_ have visible? If so, click it
and see whether your missing icons then appear.

Are we discussing the Quick Launch area or the Notification tray?

If it is the Notification tray are any icons appearing there? For the icon
not appearing what is the Behaviour setting?
