add automatic exclamation marks

I want to be able to add exclamation marks at the ends of a selected piece of
text without the need to click on to each end and adding a mark there.
Ideally this would involve highlighting a section of text and clicking a
button similar to the ‘bold’ or ‘italic’ buttons which would then assign a
mark at each end of the selected text. Can this be done? I would assume
that I could do it in a macro with some sort of wild-card character to
represent the selected text.

You are going to the trouble of highlighting the text. Wouldn't it be
easier to just click at the end of the text and add the !?
