Add a number series to existing contacts (MS 2003)

I have over 1000 Contacts in my database. I'd like to add a unique 4 digit
ID Code Number for each Contact. ie; Numbers 1000 to 2000. Is there a quick
way to do this? I've added a user-defined field to my contacts, but I
couldn't find a way to export/import numbers from Excel to update existing
contacts. Any thoughts anyone?

It could be done with VBA. But ensuring that the number really stays unique
isn't easy or done with just a few lines of code, respectively.
