Is it possible to add a new Windows 2003 domain into a single-domain Windows
2000 forest without upgrading the existing 2000 domain. The new domain would
be added as a new root domain and not a sub-domain.

Thanks in advance

A "root" domain would be the parent domain of your existing domain. You can
not create the child then create the parent.

You can create a new Win 2k3 domain and set up trusts between the Win 2k and
Win 2k3 domains.

yes you can create a new tree root domain, but WHY?

to be able to introduce W2K3 DCs, and it does not matter if that happens in
an existing or new domain, you need to upgrade the AD

Danny – Thank you for your reply. But to clarify, I was not referring to a
new root domain for the existing domain. I was referring to adding a new
domain with a different name space. Therefore the new domain would be the
root domain of the new tree in the same forest.

Becuase we are aquiring a new company and want to keep their namespace
different . We would like to install the new domain as 2003 without upgrading
the existing domain to 2003 at this time.

Differing name space would be one reason to create a new domain. You can
create the new domain as Win 2k3 without having to upgrade your existing
domain. You would have to run adprep from the Win 2k3 CD to prepare the
forest for a Win 2k3 domain.
