Add a column of numbers with text in each cell?

I have a column of numbers in a worksheet that has a number as well as some
text in each cell. I want to add all of the numerical values, and ignore the
text. How do I accomplish this?

Can you give an example of what these things look like? Are the numbers
always the same length?

Is the data consistent?

i.e. abcd1234 or 1234abcd

Show us an example and there probably is a method you can use with a helper
column to break out the numbers.
