We are trying to move our Active Directory box to a different segment. This serves as a authentication server for an exchange 2000 environment running active/passive cluster. Can anybody help me with the process?

Thanks

Hello.

Without knowing more about your environment, I would suggest reviewing the
Branch Office Deployment Guide on the steps needed to move an existing
domain controller from one location (network segment) to another location
(network segment). The context of the guide is that you have staged a new
domain controller at a staging site and will then ship the domain controller
to another location. It should closely mirror the process you will have to
take.

I do not know what changes will need to be made on your Exchange server, but
if any values for the domain controller are hard-coded, please ensure that
you update them accordingly.

Do you have a test environment to test this action before it is performed in
production?

Hi
Thanks for your time and advice

I have a single domain controller (AD box). I am running Exchange 2000 in a 2 node active/ passive cluster environment. These 2 physical nodes are member servers to the domain controller (AD box).

We are planning to move all these servers to a different segment. I am concerned witht he order of change, I mean AD box first, member servers then etc. If you have any known KB regarding this please forward to me. I will definitely appreciate your advice for the same

Thanks

Hello again.

With only a single domain controller in the domain, the order really doesn't
matter. You need to ensure that the clients get proper name resolution
(DNS) at all times. This requires ensuring that if the IP address of the DC
changes, you will want this to be reflected in the domain's forward lookup
zone in DNS.

Perhaps the simplest method would be to relocate the domain controller first
and the member servers second.

Please see the following whitepaper to illustrate how a domain controller is
moved from the staging site to the production site (changing the
location/subnet):
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/techinfo/planning/activedirectory/branchoffice/default.asp

Once you move any server, you can run the NETDIAG support tool (found on the
server CD in \support\tools\setup.exe). This ensures that domain records
are properly registered and that a domain controller can be reached.
