AD vs Domain

Are AD and Domain synonymous? Some reading tells me that
you can have a Domain w/o AD. But other reading seems to
indicate otherwise. In fact on the "configure your
server" wizard for Active Directory it says "... To make
this server a domain controller you must install Active
Directory".

Anyone know what the deal is here? Thanks --- Mike

In the Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003 world AD and domain are
synonymous. You could have an NT 4.0 domain which is not synonymous with AD.
