AD to native mode - 2 simple questions!

hope I can get a quick answer to this...

We are planning on going to 2000 Native mode (we don't have any 2003 DC's
yet) this weekend. Unfortunately, we have an NT4 BDC still at a remote site.
We are unable to shut this server down, and are now just going to try it
anyway (with the server still on-line). Other than not being able to access
this server (which we obviously don't care about - it is a long and
buearocratic story...), should the upgrade go easy?

Also, we have a child domain running in mixed. I am thinking we raise the
level in the parent domain, wait a week, and then raise the child domain.
Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Suzanne

Making the switch to native mode is un noticeable to your users. What you
will notice is if your users change their passwords the BDC will not get the
changes replicated to it. The users passwords are essentially frozen on the
BDC. It does not hold a writeable copy of the SAM so you can't "manually"
update the changed password. If you users access this BDC they will be
prompted for a password.

Danny,

Thanks for the response! We have another dc (w2k) at that site, so the
newer os's should hit that one first, right? Also, can you tell me if every
singe DC in the enterprise will need to be rebooted?

Thanks,

If you mean they you clients will use the Win 2k DC at that site, yes.

As far as I can remember the switch doesn't require a reboot. That is what I
meant about the switch being totally un noticeable.

Absolutely not! Can you imagine the chaos that could be
caused if that were so in a Domain with, say, 100 DCs?

Cheers,

Cliff
