AD & system drive backup

Using the NTBackup utility should you backup the system
drive and AD in directory save mode only (not very
practical) or does it not matter?
I run into problems restoring system drives where it was
not possible to restore the system drive from tape.
Does anyone know what's MS suggestion is?
I want to be sure I have a good tape every time I do the
backup. If it takes to do it directory save mode then
thats fine, I just like to know if some one out there had
similar problem and by doing it in directory save mode it
resolve the problem.

ntbackup of system drive and system state should be enough to recover
from disaster.
