Ad pop ups/ can't stop

Help. I am running XP pro, IE 6 SP 1 with all updates,
and the Google tool/search bar. I am getting inundated
with pop-up ads that look like they are coming through
Explorer and something called Ad Serv. I can't stop them.
Just typing this inquiry I had ads superimpose themselves
over the page three times. Please, how do I turn this
junk off? Thanks in advance. Ron
