AD Migration Question

F

Franklin

I have two domains, Domain A and Domain B.

Two way trusts are setup between Domain A and Domain B.

I want to upgrade Domain A and create it as the forest.
I then want to upgrade Domain B and add it as a domain in
the Domain A forest.

Do I need to break the NT 4 trusts before I do the
upgrade? If I do, during the AD upgrade it will recreate
the trusts.

Thanks in advanced.

You shouldn't need the trusts to do that.
When the first nt4 domain is set up it creates the new forest/domain (forest
containing a single tree consisting of only one domain). As long as dns is
configured properly, and the "other" nt4 pdc is pointed to it for dns so it
can pull AD info it needs, you will have the choice (after the actual
upgrade to 2k code it reboots then auto kicks off the AD instalation) you
have the option to be; a new domain in either a new forest or existing
forest (you want same) and then either as a child domain or a separate tree
within the forest (which ever you want/need).
Separate trees can have different names such as xyz.com and abc.com and be
in the same forest sharing the same schema etc but you need to configure dns
a bit different with secondary zones so everybody can fine each other.
If you choose child domain then you'll end up with something like
newchild.parentname.com.

Either way (child or separate tree) the domains will establish a transtive
trust between them automatically.

The nt 4 trusts are already established. I know that the
upgrade will create trasitive trusts.

Should break the original NT 4 trusts before I run the
upgrade or should I just run the upgrade and leave the
orginal nt 4 trusts in place?

I'd probably break them before the upgrade/s.
