Ad Hoc Wireless, ICS, 169.*.*.* oh my!

Terp

I am attempting to configure ics to function over an
adhoc wireless network and a regular wired network. I
have bridged the 2 adapters on the host box (wifi and lan
wired), set up ics and the wired network functions
normally.

Despite following the procedure outlined here,
http://download.microsoft.com/download/a/1/e/a1efd204-
bcac-4b0e-8d3a-d16aadbc1dbb/AdHocICS.doc , my wireless
box (a Viewsonic V1100 Tablet) is not assigned a proper
198.168.*.* ip by the host but instead display only a
169.*.*.* ip (signifying Dhcp issues.

The ad hoc wireless connection itself seems to be running
properly as both the host and client recognize one
another and appear to be connected.

Releasing and renew has no effect. Losing the bridge and
running ICS only to the wifi adapter has no effect.

The wifi adapter on the host box is a DLink DWL-520+ and
the one in the tablet is an Intel Pro/Wireless 2011b Lan
3A.

Encryption is not the problem since I am not running any
atm (ph34r the wardrivers!) -- encryption is a whole
other problem: "data frame errors - check WEP settings" on
tablet.

Anyways, I provided a bit of info and would appreciate
any help.

Thanks,
Youngun

I have tried to set a static ip (in the 192.168.0.*
range) on the tablet and am unable to ping 192.168.0.1 .

Yeah. Read that. She's a little optimistic. For some
reason it's not as easy as she would like it to be or I'm
being one-upped by grandma-technonerd (that's
unnecessary I know, but I'm frustrated).

In the conclusion she says this: "With no available DHCP
server, Windows XP provides an automatic private IP
address between 169.254.0.0 and 169.254.255.255 to
network adapters." And I'm like, ok, then what?

Even with a static ip and the gateway set to the ip of my
host connection I don't get any communication.

The problem is surely an issue with the ad hoc wireless,
but what? What I ask?

Microsoft show me the way?!

Sounds like the symptoms of hotfix 826942...do you have that on your
system? Try removing that hotfix, or if you really need that hotfix then
make sure your hardware is upgraded to firmware that supports WPA.

Humans,

There is nothing about hot. If desktop is not able to connect the DECO server, the windows itself assigns the IP address from
169.*.*.*

Vinod, I did not say that the cause of receving 169.*.*.* network address
is the hotfix, but rather that in this situation the symptoms are pointing
to something that is consistent with the hotfix being present when the
hardware is not WPA capable...I've gone through this and solved the issue
for my network.

Unless the poster follows-up, it's hard to say whether this info helped or
not. Since the other machines are receving IP addresses, the DHCP server
seems to be up & running.

hi guys,
im having an extremely similar problem, i have read the article tha
you posted, but, im not finding it of any help.
I have a desktop and a laptop, both running XP, and both fully updated
using a D-Link PCI card on the desktop and a D-Link PCMCIA card on th
laptop. The files transfer works fine (although a little fragile), bu
I have tried to setup a ICS connection from my laptop to my deskto
without success. Using the "Wizard" i might add.
The SSID's of both network cards have to be the same.... right?
I just got the kit today, and i've spent more time trying to get it t
work than i have spent saving my pennies to buy all this tech :(
If anyone can throw some light in my direction I'd be most grateful :D
Thanks
