AD DNS Name not FQDN

Hello,
In AD Users and Computers I select the Domain Controllers folder and right click my server and chose properties. The DNS name is the server name only (not the FQDN) and the field is read only. I need to change it to the FQDN because it is causing problems for my DNS service. I am using Small Business Server 2000 with WIn 2K SP4. I have a test server with the same configuration and it has its FQDN in the DNS Name field. Any idea how I can change that value?
Thanks,
Mark

Hmmm...that's strange. If you right-click my computer, choose properties,
computer name, and change, is the primary DNS suffix there??

Is it possible there's been a misconfiguration and you've a single label
domain name??

Hi Paul,
My Computer properties Network ID tab has the full computer name as the FQDN and the domain is correct. The Event log for DNS tells me I have a single label domain name but I don't know why. It suggests I change that value in My Computer properties but I cannot change it because this machine is a DC. My issues started when disabled the integrated NIC and installed a new one. I have since removed the new NIC and removed it using add remove hardware. I enabled the integrated NIC and now I get this issue. Prior to that DNS was working fine. I am using Small Biz Server 2000 so this one box serves all roles.
Thanks,
Mark

To determine if you have a single label domain name what is the DNS domain
name? Is it something like "domain" or "domainl.com"?

Also if you open ADSI Edit (you will need the Windows Support Tools
installed) and drill down in the domain container to the DC object. Go to
the properties and check the dNSHostName value that is listed and reply
back.

Hello Mark,
In ADSI Edit I expanded the Domain NC [SYNACT1], expanded DC=SynACT,DC=net,
clicked on the OU=Domain Controllers folder, right clicked CN=SYNACT1 record
in that folder and selected properties. The dNSHostName value is SYNACT1 and
the syntax is DirectoryString.
Thank you,
Mark
