Hmm... I think I'll stick with SE for a while yet while they tidy this new
one up.

Since writing this, I've been looking at the Lavasoft forum and I'm
definitely not going to touch it yet. Sounds like trouble to me - and I see
that a-squared isn't alone in introducing a new service at startup, and the
Adware one is more resource-hungry.

Alan,

Thanks for pointing this out.
I only have it installed at work. I was waiting for the public Gamma test
to show some fruit/faults before I tried it at home.

I will now wait.
I allow NO antimalware program to run anything in the background unless it
it providing active protection. (This is why I have removed the "winlogon"
setting which superantispyware tried to install [SB S&D's Teatimer caught
it]).

If it is not doing anything at start up it should not run at startup.
And the resources it's wasting is just silly.
(also I do not like that I can't remove AdWatch in the free version)

I have great respect for LavaSoft and AdAware was the first antimalware
product I ever used. I will continue to use the SE edition. I am confident
that LavaSoft will respond to the complaints/concerns expressed. If not,
well let's hope it doesn't come to that.

you are right- even though I have it on my computers with all the problems
many users have seen especially with this aservice part I will not be
putting it on clients computers (i do not need the headaches) and wait till
lavasoft figures this all out and updates this program.
AD aware se was an excellant program and I do not understand why they would
make a good program go so bad in many cases. As I said before I do not like
the interphase of this new version and I do not like the fact that it is
running in the backround and this one you cannot set to manual without
something going haywire

One of the arguments being put forward on the Lavasoft forum (and this could
equally well apply to the recent addition of an automatically-started service
with a-squared) is that it's harder for malware to disable an on-demand
scanner if the service has already started.

If that's right, then I could see a distinct advantage in allowing the
service to run for an on-demand scanner like a-squared, where the service is
very light on use of resources. Not so convinced about AdAware 2007, though
there seem to be so many potential bugs there that it's hard to see the
situation clearly in that case.

Just to add to this - a chap on the a-squared forum tells me that if I
normally work as Administrator (like almost all XP users, apparently), there
is no significant security difference in this respect. (I'm not in a
position to judge - but thought it worth reporting these snippets, for other
more knowledgeable types to comment on.) There seems to be quite a lot of
conflicting (mis?)information around.

the clear is to remove it from their website and fix all the bugs then put
it back on
