activesync or outlook problem

T

Tim Scott Mathews

After upgrading the ROM on my Axim x51v I was unable to sync with the pc
getting a prompt that I had to install Outlook if I wished to include mail,
contacts and calendar with the sync. Assuming that for some reason
activesync wasn't able to "see" the beta, I uninstalled it. Then, Outlook
2003 wouldn't run with the prompt "missing or corrupted mapi32.dll" so,
having seen this on other posts, I renamed it mapi32.old and tried to start
Outlook but got the same prompt.

I have tried removing and reinstalling the entire Office 2003 program,
repairing it, reinstalling Outlook 2003 and, finally, removing the entire
package and reinstalling the Beta 2007 version.

The 2007 version would then load BUT when trying to connect the Axim I got
the same old "mapi32.dll" couldn't be found but the program trying to locate
it was wcesmgr.exe. Thinking this must be something to do with Activesync,
I thought, perhaps, because of the rom update, I needed to reinstall
activesync so I tried. This produced an error that the installation had
been terminated before it could be completed and that I should try again
later. Several tries produced the same result so I tried uninstalling
Activesync and that produces a "fatal error."

So, I can't install Activesync and I can't uninstall it. As the fresh
install of Outlook 2007 seems to at least be working, I'm assuming this is
an activesync problem but am including this in the Outlook group as well
just in case someone has come across this problem and can give me some idea
what to try.

Any ideas, anyone?

Thanks

Hi,
At this point it sounds like a problem with left over files from the Outlook
2007 beta and so you are unable to install Outlook 2003. Now you said that
Outlook 2007 is installed and working. At this point Microsoft has not
released a version of ActiveSync that supports all the features of Outlook
2007. The latest production version is ActiveSync 4.2. Are you installing
this release? There have been reports of users that are unable to sync all
items with 2007.

That's what I'm assuming. I was/am using AS 4.2. When I got up this
morning, I had a new thought...as everything was working prior to whatever
happened yesterday, I decided to go back to that mapi32.dll file I'd renamed
mapi32.old and return it to it's original name. At this point, I opened
Outlook, connected my pda and, voila, the setup ran perfectly and everything
seems to be just fine. So, I can only guess that you're right about there
being problems with 2007 which may mean at times I'll have to reinstall.
Then again, it will be interesting to see if it happens again now that
Office 2003 is no longer on my system. Well, the files are still there but
the programs have been removed.

Whatever the case, I'll see how it goes for a week or so and if nothing
further happens, I'll post again just to let you know.

I do have a question though...where does the mapi32.dll come from? I had
assumed it came into being as a part of the Office installation as that was
the first reference I had seen to it but with the last error coming via the
attempt to sync I wonder if it's a part of the Activesync installation?

Thanks,
Tim

The file to rename to get Outlook 2003 working again is "MSMAPI32.dll" - do not mess with the MAPI32.dll. Once you rename that file, reinstall Outlook 2003 (if uninstalled) or simply open Outlook - it will automatically repair the file and it should work again.

BTW, I have my Axim working perfectly with Outlook 2007 - it took a soft reset to get it to work- Activesync 4.2.

Well, at least I've confirmed that I'm dumb as ever. I read a post--yours I
think-- to someone having a problem and did the renaming from memory rather
than writing it down, thus, forgetting the "ms" at the start of the
filename. Thank God all I got out of it was a headache and didn't trash
everything...at least I don't think so. Thanks so much.

Glad to hear about the Axim. I've just updated the ROM on mine and am about
to sync and reinstall some of the extra programs I use.

Thanks again,
Tim
