I was wondering if there was some way of controlling how an active window is controlled in Windows XP. For example, if I have Microsoft Word open and I open another application can I have the application open in the background without having it open as the active window?

If you right click on the shortcut and click properties in the start menu,
you can use the 'Run' drop down box to change how the app opens, either
'Normal window', 'Minimised' or 'Maximised'

Hope this helps
