active directory wont install

Hi,

I have a windows 2k server and Im thinking of replacing it with a higher
spec machine. I've install windows 200 server on that machine and trying to
install active directory on it but Im not too sure of how to do this as when
I do it says it can not connect or contact my domain controller. My domain
is called company.com and it says it can't find the controller...

Have I done something wrong in setting up the domain or dns settings?
Please help

Thanks
Mike

The first thing you need to be sure of is that the DNS settings on the new
machine point to the DNS server on the existing Windows 2000 AD computer.
At that point you should be able to promote the new server to an AD domain
controller and create a copy of the Global Catalog on the new server.

Assuming you mean to fully retire the existing AD server, then you would
want to get DNS running on the new server, then point the new server to look
at its DNS instead of the DNS on the old server, and finally demote the old
AD server to a plain member server.

Oh yes, should also mention, you'll need a mechanism to communicate to the
domain members that DNS is changing if complete retirement of the existing
server is what you intend. Otherwise your domain will not work correctly
following the retirement of the old server.

Yes the DNS settings are pointing to the DNS server on the existing win2000
AD computer. But still no go... I've actually made it join the domain as
well so it recognises the the domain controller at that point but not when I
want to run dcpromo on it ...

What errors show up in the Event Log when you attempt to join the domain?
