yeah, i recently had a computer built for me and we used the old os homexp
disk from the dell that fried. havent had any problems. then i found out they
put wrong mb in. so they swapped it out. and reformatted and reinstalled
windows again. ran all the updates and activated it. so jus the other day
while logging on a popup said i needed to activate. so i hit yes. went to
destop and another popup came up saying it already was. well, it started on 7
days. and i let it count down to 3 days and after talkin to some guys about
several diff. crashes i had and this activation thing they told me to
reformat reinstall. so i did. and all was as it should be. the little popup
telling me i had 30 days. so after getting most stff on and av updated and
started on windows updates. when i got down to the last 4 criticals/h pri.
updates and installed and rebooted i started to go online again and a popup
came up saying windows was already activated again.and the 30 day thing
dissappeared off taskbar. man, i dont know whats goin on but i hope someone
can tell me. cant get ms to help since its a oem disk. cant call dell cuz now
its in another system. nothin wrong with os disk its the darn activation
thing. and in my opinion thats ms's responsibility. i need answers and help.

OEM versions are permanently tied to the original hardware--you're using the
Dell version in violation of the licensing agreement (the EULA) so it's not
surprising that your're having trouble. You can expect the trouble to
continue until you install a properly licensed version of the OS.

That pretty much covers it. OEM versions of Windows are
licensed for the machine they shipped with and are
sometimes also locked to the hardware in some way.
That's one of the reasons that OEM versions cost less.

You're trying to use a pirated OEM installation CD. Purchase a
legitimate license for the new computer and perform a clean
installation.

That disk was quite possibly customised to the Dell hardware, but more
importantly is an OEM one which is licensed solely to the machine it was
supplied with. The license dies with that machine and may not be
installed on another (it was supplied at a much reduced price, partly
for this reason)

Actually, if Dell gave him an XP OEM that has no Dell stuff on it and 120
days have past, there should be no reason why he wouldn't be able install it
on another machine.

Cross-post when necessary, but never multi-post. Cross-posting is when you
include two or more groups in the "Newsgroups:" section. In this scenario
the message and all responses are seen in all groups that the message was
cross-posted to. In other words any replies will automatically propagate to
the other newsgroup posts.

Multi-posting is when you post the same message to two or more groups
individually. In this scenario the message is seen in the groups it is
posted to, but the responses are only seen attached to the message (unless
you cross-post the reply) in which the response was made. So those that
frequent these groups then need to deal with or re-read the posts. It may
seem like a small thing to keep track of. But some of us actively traverse
50 or more groups. The poster also then must search out all of the posts to
see if there was a response.

Legalistically there would be. The 120 day relaxation is for people who
buy retail copies and make regular changes in hardware. And in any case
the Setup on a maker's CD like that is liable to make a check of some
aspect of the hardware (like the BIOS in order to BIOS lock) and not
work on anyone else's

I said *if* Dell gave him an XP OEM that *has no* Dell stuff on it ...
Legally, I don't think it's been settled in a court of law so that's
speculation.
