I would like to move my copy of XP Pro to my new desktop.
The laptop that is running it is dieing. How do I move
the activation

Thank You
Don

First, if it is a OEM copy (it came installed on the laptop) you can't move
it. If it is a Retail version, not OEM it can be moved. If it has been more
than 120 days since it was installed it will activate normally, if less you
will have to activate by phone, using the number you will be given on the
screen. Since XP is installed on a laptop it is probably OEM and can't be
moved.

Just move it, don't worry about the OEM thing the OS
doesn't know what it is on. You can get a adapter to use
the laptop drive then copy it to the desktop. if it's
been over 120 days it will online, otherwise it's a
automated phone call.

Greetings --

Assuming a retail license (OEM licenses are not transferable),
simply remove WinXP from the computer it is currently on, and install
it onto the new one. If it's been more than 120 days since you last
activated that specific Product Key, you'll most likely be able to
activate via the Internet without problem. If it's been less, you
might have to make a 5 minute phone call.
