Activation

I was forced to "activate" my XP which I've been using
for almost a year. Is this a valid procedure? Why?

This isn't quite right. Anyone who knows about WPA(windows product activation) knows that the system will become inoperable after 3 months or less if you don't activate it. I rather suspect you have a pirate copy and an update detected it. This is a hot topic and really no good for this forum.

Anyone who knows about windows product activation knows that the
system will become inoperable (except in safe mode) after 30
days if you don't activate it.

No. Unless you make significant hardware changes, the activation will
stay. You probably have a virus or spyware.
