Activation?

Helping a friend with a HP Pavilion XT973 preinstalled os. Lots of
spyware,adware,malware, and a couple of trogans. Pretty well cleaned up now.
Used sfc /scannow to verify os files, rebooted, and am now getting a product
activation screen won't let me to desktop except in safe mode. Any ideas
appreciated.

And what happens when you try to activate it?

When I try to activate it Microsoft tells me it's an invalid key.

Thanks Carey. Got it figured out, had to change the key to the one on the
side of the computer, call Microsoft and talk to an actual person. Got a new
activation code. Why would the system file checker cause this behavior? No
hardware has been changed on this machine. I've used sfc on other machines
and not had this happen.
