Just upgraded 98SE to XP Home on a laptop. Deferred activation pending
arrival of ADSL connection.
ADSL installed late last week and started the activation process today and
it wanted to dial an 0800 number on a modem (which I dont have). I thought
activations were done via the internet? I could always phone but its simpler
to do it the internet way. Can I change the way activation happens? i.e. use
my internet connection?

TIA

it does not say to call from a modem! You are looking at the phone
activation, the number you are seeing is for you to dial from your phone and
you follow instructions given.
But since you have an internet connection you should be able to do it via
the internet.

I clicked on the activation icon in the taskbar. The next screen said it was
going to dial this 0800 number on the modem connection. It said that I could
phone if preferred to activate. Hence my question.

Make sure XP "sees" your ADSL internet connection as the default
connection. Sounds like you may not have setup your ADSL connection
correctly. When I activated with my broadband connection, it was
done immediately without any further dialogs or intervention on my
part.

You can activate by phone. From the windows help file.

To activate Windows by phoneThe Windows Product Activation Wizard is
located in System Tools. To open a system tools item, click Start,
point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and
then click the appropriate icon., then click Activate Windows.
Follow the activation instructions that appear on your screen.
Notes

Alternatively, you can open the Windows Product Activation wizard by
clicking Start, then Run, and type in "oobe/msoobe /a".
If you do not have a modem or an Internet connection, you can activate
your copy of Windows by calling a Microsoft customer service
representative. Activating Windows is fast and does not require your
name or other personal information.

Check your Internet settings in Control Panel. You probably have the
"always dial my default connection" option selected.

If you have a full time ADSL service the Internet Option should be set
to "never dial a connection".

Good luck

And he might want to delete any Dialup Networking settings for his old
internet connection.
