Activation trouble.. Error 0x80090006

I have used this installation of XP for more than a year. It was duly
activated after it was installed first time. However, yesterday I made some
hardware changes to the computer. Added some RAM, and removed a CD drive. And
since then, once XP boots, it throws an Windows messagebox which says
Message box title : "Windows Product Activation"
Message : "A problem is preventing windows from accurately check the lience
for this computer, Error Code:0x80090006".
After you press OK (there is no Cancel), it pops up again, in an infinite
loop.

A quick search on the internet revealed that a few people have seen this
message, but only after they log in. This XP has auto-login enabled, and I
suspect it shows this message soon after XP logs default user in.
This problem occurs even in Safe mode, so there is really no way to log in
and rectify the problem. I do not prefer to reinstall XP from within.

If anyone knows a better way to fix this problem, I would appriciate if you
can post a reply.
Thanks very much in advance.

First, make sure your RAM is properly seated in it's slot.

Do a memory test. http://www.memtest86.com/

Your new memory might be bad, if it is, remove the bad RAM. I just got
some bad DDR2 RAM and set it back to the web store I bought it from,
however if it is past their return period, send try to send it band to
the manufacturer.

If you are screwed out of your computer, and this probably won't work,
but using a dos boot disk, delete the files wpa.dbl & wpa.old from
C:\WINDOWS\system32. Reboot. And see if you can logon and reactivate.

If that doesn't work, then try a Repair install.

This totally sucks! For absolutely no benefit to you the End User, MS
has add Product Activation for their benefit, but takes no
responisbility for when it scews up. And all that PA does for End Users
is SCREW UP!

Thanks for the replies, Kelly / Kurt.
Memory is not a problem. I tested it, and just for the sake, replaced old
small RAM. Yes, not working.

Given the amount of downtime and trouble one has to go through for no fault
of mine, Linux is increasingly becoming appealing.
