The recovery cd option on my comp never worked. A while
back I used my roommate's system restoration disk to
reinstall windows on my comp, as an attempt to fix damage
done by a virus. Since then I kept getting a message
telling me to activate windows and when I'd click on it it
would say windows is already activated click ok to exit.
Now that 30 days have passed I can't get onto windows, it
gives me the same message at start up. If anyone can give
me some help I'd greatly appreciate it.

You need to use *your* recovery cd to reinstall xp. If your cd doesn't work
call the oem you bought the computer from and have them send you another.
You can't mix and match recovery cd's, they are usually for a specific model
of machine and are pre-activated and sometimes bios locked, meaning they
won't activate if they see a different bios(like the different one in your
computer compared to your friends).

Contact your computer vendor for a replacement restore CD and do a restore
with it.

Choose to do phone Activation, and under that there should be a place to
change the product key. Change your product key to the one that came with
the computer, and then activate over the phone. Don't tell them what you
did. It's none of their business.

"The only information required to activate is an installation ID (and, for
Office XP and Office XP family products such as Visio 2002, the name of the
country in which the product is being installed)." -
