Activation - Old drive in new machine

I have a recent install of XP Home full Edition running on a PC that will be
replaced by a machine with XP Home OEM. Rather than re-installing all the
apps and moving data, I want to simply replace the HD in the new machine with
the old machine's HD.

The new machine is significantly faster CPU, 4X memory, new MAC, new
video,etc etc.

What will happen with the activation & validation on my 'old' XP system with
all these changes in the hardware?

I really don't want to go through the agony of taking off all the 'stuff'
that comes on the new machine and re-installing all the apps that are quite
happy (but slow) on the old machine.

The flip-side of this is another question... Will the new XP Home OEM
activate properly if I install that HD in the old box?

Its a fairly simple process, however,if you ever re-install xp youre full
version
will not work in registering with microsoft since it was on the older
machine.
To switch the drives, you really cant if going to new machine, the old drive
was
configured to the other board, you can however,on old machine, run the file
transfer wizard.Open the wizard,set as old machine,select the files/folders/
settings for it to save, save the data in a new folder that you create, once
its thru
transfer the folder to a cd.Then in new machine, set as new, browse to folder

What type of CD does the new machine come with?

Do you want to be able to use your existing XP Home "full" edition
license on the old PC? Or on some other computer?

If your new machine comes with a Windows XP installation CD then you
could do a Repair Install using that CD. This would then allow you to
use your existing Windows XP license on the old PC or to move it to
another computer.

If your new machine comes with a "System Recovery" CD or with a hidden
System Recovery partition on the hard drive then the above option is
not available to you. What you could do is to do a Repair Install
using your "full" edition CD. That would mean that the license for
that copy would be used by the new PC. The OEM Windows license that
comes with the new PC would be wasted, as it cannot be legitimately
transferred to another computer under any circumstances; and if it is
a SLP (BIOS Locked) OEM version then it would be physically impossible
to use it on another machine.

See http://michaelstevenstech.com/moving_xp.html for instructions on
how to move the hard drive and get Windows XP running on the new
hardware.

Good luck
