Activation Nightmare

I had to fix a laptop that was getting the BSOD. Reinstalled XP Home, did a
repair installation, everything works fine except now i need to activate
before logging in. I just spent an hour on the phone with Microsoft in 3
seperate phone calls. The first 2 times I got disconnected. The last time I
spent 15 minutes on the phone with somebody that was having trouble
generating a new installation ID because they had system problems. Then,
without saying anything, he transfered me to a Microsoft generic help line
and I was informed i needed to call the activation phone# direct because
"that is a different number". I just don't understand why Microsoft wants to
put legit users through this grief.

Understand. Our CEO decided to switch all the PCs over to Windows
2000 due to this hassle, no activation required.

Really did not have to do that. The business should have gone the Volume
License route for XP from the outset instead of getting hung up on the
problems and issues of WPA.

I hope they keep it up long enough so that it drives all their users away.

Doesn't really sound like much of a nightmare; pick up the phone, have the
info at hand, and try again. Let me start siphoning off half your paycheck
without your knowledge and you'll understand what MS and many others now are
up to.

That sounds dumb and indicates two things: Ignorance of what an OS is
capable of and its compatability with its intended use, plus refusal to
purchase a multi-seat key. It's simple when done correctly and RTFM also
comes to mind, in the sense that all such information is readily available
to those who wish to read it.

Just wait until a virus creator does a virus that just requires ALL
windows XP versions to do a required activation on the same day. Wonder
if that would be "just a phone call" or wait.....wait......wait....

No. Just a sneaky move by micro$oft tying the os to the bios by the
oem; m$ has admitted that was being done.
