Activation error (0xc004c003) after SP1 install

G

GeoffD

We use a KMS to activate most of our Vista Enterprise systems, and it appears
to be working fine. I installed SP1 on my activated Vista Ent. laptop, and
now I'm getting activation errors.

Specifically, there are two entries in the Windows Application log: EventID
1012, and EventID 8200, both of which mention the error code (0xc004c003).
Running this through slui.exe translates this as "The activation server has
determnined the specified product key is in use."

Since I anticipate a more comprehensive roll-out of SP1 soon, I'd like to
know what the problem is and how to resolve or prevent it from happening to
my clients.

Many thanks,

Hello Geoff,
Open an elevated cmd prompt
run slmgr -dli and reply back with the output from the 5 lines listed below.
Something similar to this:

Name: Windows(TM) Vista, Enterprise edition
Description: Windows Operating System - Vista, VOLUME_KMSCLIENT channel
Partial Product Key: 4BWMV
License Status: Licensed
Volume activation expiration: 253380 minute(s) (175 day(s))

Thanks,

Name: Windows(TM) Vista, Enterprise edition
Description: Windows Operating System - Vista, RETAIL channel
Partial Product Key: JGTVF
License Status: Initial grace period
Time remaining: 32880 minute(s) (22 day(s))

I will note that I installed SP1 by using the "check online for updates from
Microsoft Update" int he Windows Update cpl.

Thanks for your assistance.

Hello Geoff,
This is the part that is incorrect:
| >Description: Windows Operating System - Vista, RETAIL channel
This shows as Retail which it should not show VOLUME_KMSCLIENT channel
The service pack should not have done this, there is not Retail Windows
Enterprise Channel.
Try changing the product key back to the KMS Client Setup Keys:
Listed in the link below.

For your case:
From the elevated CMD prompt:
slmgr -ipk VKK3X-68KWM-X2YGT-QR4M6-4BWMV

I thought that might be the issue. Will the installation of SP1 change the
product key for all our existing Vista Ent. clients?

I'll try the fix on Monday morning and let you know how it goes.

Hello Geoff,
It's not supposed to change it.
I have done multiple installations of SP1 to Windows Vista Enterprise
without it affecting my Activation status.
Prior to the next upgrade to SP1, please run slmgr -dlv all and save the
output.
Then upgrade and see if changes it again.

Thanks,

I changed the product key, and then successfully activated against my KMS. I
will keep your suggestion in mind for the next client upgrade.

Many Thanks!

Hello Geoff,
If another client has this issue, capture the output, both before and after
and save off the application event log.

Thanks,
