Is another copy of Windows XP home edition necessary after
a harddrive crashes and is replaced, or can I use the same
product ID and activate it successfully?

.
Windows checks a number of hardware components when you
first install it and if you try to reinstall windows
provided you have substantially the same computer there
will be no problems. Changing only the hard drive should
not create any problems even if you have the OEM edition
and have not purchased the full priced item. You can
change several items and should not have any difficulties.

I had this happen to me a while ago. I changed the my
motherboard and graphics card and NIC, and the machine
wouldn't boot (kept on going blue screen - suspect then
P3 motherboard did not like the AMD microcode)- The
upshot was I had to re-install windows. When I tried to
activate it failed, I then had to make a phone call to
Microsoft activation line and explain the situation and
they took me through a manual activation process, took
about 5-10 minutes and a 50 character activation string
to be typed in.

Greetings --

There's no limit to the number of times you can reinstall and
activate the same WinXP license on the same PC. If it's been more
than 120 days since you last activated that specific Product Key,
you'll most likely be able to activate via the Internet without
problem. If it's been less, you might have to make a 5 minute phone
call.

Here are the facts pertaining to activation:

No new copy is required. You can install and activate the one you
have. Worst case, depending on how long it's been, you'll have to
activate by voice call to an 800 number, but that's quick and
easy.
