I am helping a friend get her new system going. It is a
Compaq with WinXP preinstalled. I do not see where or if
she needs to activate WinXP as I needed to when
installing WindowsXP from a disk.
Thanks

Windows XP from large OEMs like Dell or HP/Compaq typically come
pre-activated, so the end-user never needs to deal with it. This may very
well be the case with the PC your friend has.

Thank you both for the information. I suspected as much
but appreciate the confirmation. I have updated her
Windows through Windows Update which was a real labor of
love due to her being on a dial up connection.....

A system preinstalled by a maker like Compaq will have
the matter handled by the system being 'locked to the BIOS' so you do
not need subsequent activation
