hi all,

just a quick question, i have an OEM version of XP Pro and i was just
wondering, if i activated during my first ever installation and the system
dies on me 2 years from now and i have to re-format and install a fresh copy
of XP, would they allow me to activate it again? or would i have to purchase
a new one? thanks

Yes, you can reformat, reinstall, and reactivate as often as you
need (or want) to. The only restriction on OEM versions is that
your license is limited to the machine it's already installed on.
It can never be sold, given away, or moved to another machine.

Actually and oem can be given away with the whole computer

Yes--or sold with the whole computer. That's what I meant of
course, but I didn't say it as clearly as I might have. Thanks
for the correction.

Activating XP again, will not be a problem.
But it would be nice if you could talk to a real person initially,
instead of going through the automated activate by phone, then being
routed to a real person after it fails.

Unfortunately real people get paid real money even while sitting there
waiting for the phone to ring. Automated systems are very much
cheaper.

I have a question. Don't you have to *uninstall* it from the hard
drive before you can *reinstall* it? And if so, what happens if your
hard drive dies before you get a chance to uninstall it?

Do you mean before you can reinstall it on another machine? Yes,
technically, although the real issue is that both are done around
the same time.

If the hard drive dies, then the hard drive essentially did the
uninstallation for you. It's not there anymore, and that's all
that counts.

OEM Windows XP cannot legally be installed on another machine. To
reinstall it on the same machine (new hard drive or the existing hard
drive) does not require that you uninstall it first. Part of the
reinstall process is for Windows XP installer to format your hard
drive.

You're right of course. The fact that it was OEM was way back in
the thread and I had forgotten it.
