I have recently guided a friend on a new PC and set it up for him.
I created his email account in Windows Mail but after a couple of days
send/receive did not download emails though no error was shown, however they
were viewable at the ISP's server. As the emails are still at the ISP's
server they are not going into another folder.
Deleting his account from Windows Mail and setting it up again allowed
emails to download but this pattern has to be repeated on a regular basis.
The new PC is a Dell 530S O/S Vista Premium, 2GB RAM. The Antivirus/Firewall
is F-Secure. The ISP is BT in the UK.
This problem never arose with Outlook Express on his old PC. Is there a
known issue with Windows Mail that might be causing this please ?

Windows Mail has more problems with interference from antivirus programs,
especially if more than one of them is installed at a time. New computers
often come with one of the antivirus programs known to cause problems
in Windows Mail already installed (Norton, McAfee, or Trend), so make
sure you don't have one of those installed too. The Norton and McAfee
programs can cause problems even after they are uninstalled, so also
look for signs that they used to be installed.

Also check if you have the Google Toolbar program installed. If you
do, uninstall it.

If you have any programs with SMS in their names installed, tell us
their full names; some of them also cause problems in Windows Mail.

A trial version of McAfee came with the PC but I uninstalled it, there may be
bits of it still lurking around. Google Toolbar was not on the PC when the
Windows Mail problems arose. I will find out if any program names contain SMS
and advise you.
Many thanks so far.

Earlier I found mcpr.exe on the McAfee site but thanks for telling me about it.
I also note the suggestion about using Windows Live Mail.
Grateful thanks to all.
