Accessing This Group without a NewsReader..?

I've been using it for a LONG time, maybe 10 years, when I had to buy
it, before it because OpenSource.

I like gravity because it shows the groups and threads in a manner that
I would naturally expect them to be - as well as allowing multiple
signatures on demand and it's FREE and very easy on resources.

One other benefit is the ability to export and import the setup/Usenet
counts on startup - since I have many computers, I have Gravity set to
export the NEWSRC file to a network share on exit, on start it imports
it, so this means I get the same read/unread from any computer in my
location, I don't have to see ones I've already read just because I'm on
a different computer.

I downloaded and tested Gravity as a comparison to Agent, but it did
not come out favourably....
I tried to reply to a post here and when I sent it there was after a
short while a message saying that it could not be sent. See event log
for details. Only there is nothing at all in the event log on my PC!
And furthermore the message I tried sending seems to have vanished for
good.
In Agent, the outgoing messages are kept until they are sent so you
can send them later. And they also are all in te "out box" so you can
load them again and edit and resend.
All of this sems to be sorely lacking in Gravity. :-(
Or I did not find it....

Gravity is free, text based, even does UU-Encoding if you're into

I can't disagree with your assessment that OE is a buggy and often
lacking interface for both mail and news, but the newsreader capability
was not "added" to its email program....the newsreader portion was
developed in its predecessor program, Microsoft Internet Mail and News,
which was released in 1996 along with IE3.

It is also not just used by noobs....although you may have been online
so long that you consider most everyone a noob, yes? ;-)

If there is an ISP, they definitely have a server. They may not have an
NNTP - news - server, but they definitely have a server.
so he cant even use Outlook Express.

Probably won't work, as ISP-specific servers are often not available from
outside connections.
What can he do to get access to this and other groups on the microsoft
server? Is there a browser way-in? (he has FireFox)

Attach to the MS news servers.

One of the names is:

msnews.microsoft.com

Thank you all for replies.

I was at his house today and tried setting up the groups via Outlook
again, and this time, Success. I must have done a typo before, and so
it didnt work. I think it was Pa Bear who said that no matter what, I
should be able to get him to groups via outlook, so I persisted down
that road today.

He has another problem and has already posted it to the appropiate group
on the MS server,, (well, I guess I sorta helped, but at least he now
knows what n/g's are.)

Again, thanks for all the assist.

Yes, I do fully understand that pa. Outlook Express is what has been
used, and it works just fine.

Pig-Bear is a bull-shitter if this is what he told you. You cannot access
newsgroups using Outlook. Please don't waste your time on Outlook instead
launch Outlook Express and you will be in the correct path to set it up
correctly.

You have to understand that Pig-Bear is 78 nearly 79 and he is an active
member of the Geriatric Society of United States so don't expect him to give
you correct answers all the time. He has got canned answers to everything
that goes likke this:

know what PA Bear really told the poster...that Outlook Express has
newsreader functionality but Outlook does not.

You're a few decades off on his age also.....he's got quite some time to
go before being "geriatric"...not that age has anything to do with
intelligence. You only reveal your own ignorance and prejudice with
statements like that, so thanks for showing us who you are. We can now
safely disregard much of anything you say.

Yes and yes..! I had already made it clear in earlier posts that I DO
know how to set up Newsgroups via outlook(xpress)... and that I would
give it another try when I was in front of his computer again... which
turned out to be yesterday. (I can set-up any newsreader to access
newsgroups, but you must remember I was helping a non-literate computer
user, and hence I used O/E for familiarity sake.)

All is fine and working, so it had to be a typo on my part in the nntp
field when I first tried.

Boy oh boy, this is a weird newsgroup; seems everyones got something to
say, yet nobody reads what the original poster posted, or followed what
he had to say. I made it clear way back at the beginning, and I knew
that pa was right regarding I 'should' be able to use O/E to get
friend here, and hence I tried again.

so again, thank you to all who helped.(just feel sorry for friend now,
for he has to navigate through threads like this where obvious bun
throwing is normal.)

fwiw,, cold is getting better, thanks.

Then please stop using "Outlook" when you mean "Outlook Express," else you
may receive incorrect, possibly disastrous advice.
